Odense unites around an immortal legacy

Hans Christian Andersen passed away 150 years ago, but his stories live on. They are part of our shared narrative, our cultural heritage, our identity. They still touch us – from Nr. Nebel to New Delhi.

The Background of the Commemoration

In 2025, Odense will mark this milestone with a grand, collective effort: Andersen Forever. We do this because art and culture are what connect us and create the foundation for inspiring conversations. Art and culture can open difficult topics and remain timeless across past, present, and future. H.C. Andersen's fairy tales are not just stories, but mirrors that allow us to see ourselves. His reflections on life, death, loss, and immortality remain relevant today.

Throughout the city, we will experience how his works come to life through exhibitions, performances, interactive installations, and dialogues that transcend time. Andersen Forever will present high-quality art and culture, featuring local, national, and international artists, all focused on creating engaging experiences. Odense will be adorned in shades of blue, and the business community, cultural institutions, and city shops will unite to welcome everyone.

Andersen Forever is not just a commemoration, but a living narrative where we collectively explore what it means to remember – and what it means to live on.

Andersen himself wrote: "Our body dies, but the soul cannot die." By sharing his words, interpreting his stories, and creating new works in his spirit, we do exactly that: We let the soul live on.
