The Future of Odense’s Viking Narrative
As part of the application to gain UNESCO World Heritage status for Nonnebakken—alongside the four other Danish ring fortresses—plans were presented on how to make Odense’s Viking history more accessible and engaging for both tourists and locals.
The initial phase of the project has been funded by Odense Municipality and developed by Erik Brandt Dam Architects and JAC Studios, known for their work on the Wadden Sea Centre, in collaboration with the consulting engineering firm MOE.
Museum Odense is working towards realizing the project in the coming years, although full funding is still pending.
The project outlines how Odense’s Viking narrative and Nonnebakken’s historical significance can be better communicated on-site. It also details the development of the Viking Route podwalk to Nonnebakken—a historical walking trail connecting key sites in the city. This route links Nonnebakken with three other Viking-related landmarks: Odense Cathedral, where the remains of King Canute the Holy are preserved; a planned historical staircase at Eventyrhaven, designed to unfold the story of the city’s past; and Museum TID, where the permanent Viking exhibition will receive greater focus in the future.
