Klaregade - A Street from the Middle Ages
Klaregade is one of the oldest streets in Odense, with a rich history spanning more than 1,000 years. Along with Paaskestræde, it illustrates the extent of early Odense, which developed around strategically important transport routes. During the Viking Age, Klaregade was part of the east-west main route across Funen, playing a vital role in the city's growth.
The street also marks the location of a significant historical crossing over the river, linking Odense to the north-south traffic on Funen. This strategic hub was likely one of the reasons why the Viking fortress Nonnebakken was built around the year 980 near Klaregade.
The city's early development was further supported by the presence of both military and religious gathering points, including the sacred site Odins Vi, believed to have been located near today’s Klaregade Bridge.
